My Red Cross Volunteer Story: Betty Cox

Betty Cox has been volunteering with Blood Services since April 2009, giving more than 100 hours of service every year at the Fairfax Donor Center. Betty is very dedicated and can be counted on to provide excellent customer service to blood donors!

“Ms. Betty is very nice to our donors and staff,” says Donor Center Manager, Ivan Sherman. “She is always on time and dedicated [making our donors] feel welcome and always has a beautiful smile on her face.”

Betty was born in Dayton, Ohio and volunteering has always been a tradition in her family.

As the wife of an Army Officer, Betty has traveled the world. In 1955, she became a Red Cross Gray Lady in Germany, where he was assigned. She started by visiting young soldiers in hospitals.

Later on, Betty helped establish Yesterday’s Rose — a thrift shop for the Red Cross in Fairfax. She worked there until she took a job as an interior designer.

After retirement, Betty called the Red Cross, said "I'm back!" and has been volunteering at the Fairfax Donor Center every Thursday since!

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Betty Cox – Volunteer of the Month for September 2017!

  1. Congrats to Betty. She is a treasure. As a volunteer, I occasionally take the shift after her, and it is always delightful to see her and hear how her day has been.
